Google Contacts is regularly updated to enhance functionality, improve user experience, and ensure security. Here’s an overview of how often updates are released and how they are managed:
Regular Updates: Google Contacts receives frequent updates, though the exact frequency can vary. Updates may be minor bug fixes, performance improvements, or significant feature additions.
Feature Rollouts: New features and improvements are often rolled out incrementally, meaning not all users receive updates simultaneously. This phased approach helps Google monitor the impact and address any issues promptly.
Automatic Updates: Updates to Google Contacts are typically managed automatically through the Google Play Store or App Store, depending on the device. Users do not need to manually download updates.
Notification of Changes: Major updates and new features are often announced through official Google blogs, support pages, or in-app notifications. This ensures users are informed about significant changes and how to use new features.
Sync Enhancements: Recent updates have focused on improving the synchronization process, making it easier to keep contacts up-to-date across multiple devices and platforms. For example, a new "Contact sync" section in settings provides a clear overview of sync status and linked accounts.
Security and Privacy: Updates also include enhancements to security and privacy features, such as the ability to report illegal profile content directly from contact cards.
Simplified Syncing: Recent updates have made contact syncing more intuitive and transparent, showing synced account details within contact cards and providing easy access to sync settings.
Enhanced Contact Management: Features like "Merge & fix" help users manage duplicates and keep their contact list clean and organized.
User Control and Transparency: Updates often include tools for better user control and transparency, such as the ability to see where each contact is stored and synced from.
Content Ownership: Google explicitly states that users retain ownership of the content they create using Google services, including contacts in Google Contacts. Google does not claim ownership over user-generated content.
Export Data: Google provides a tool called Google Takeout, which allows users to export their data, including contacts, from Google services. This tool supports data portability by enabling users to download and transfer their data to other services.
Wide Support: Google Takeout supports data export from over 70 Google products, making it a comprehensive solution for data portability.
Data Transfer Project (DTP):
Collaboration: Google is part of the Data Transfer Project, an open-source initiative involving major tech companies like Apple, Microsoft, and Twitter. This project aims to simplify data portability by allowing users to transfer data directly between services without needing to download it first.
Ease of Use: The DTP facilitates data transfers even for users with limited internet access or storage, making it easier to switch services without losing data.
Privacy and Security:
Compliance: Google ensures that data portability features comply with applicable privacy and data protection laws. This includes safeguards against unauthorized access and data breaches during the transfer process.
User Control: Users have control over their data and can manage, export, or delete it as needed. Google provides transparency about what data is collected and how it is used, allowing users to make informed decisions.
Consumer Choice: Google believes that data portability supports competition and innovation by allowing users to switch services without losing their data. This encourages companies to provide better services to attract and retain users.
Exportability: Platforms that allow data import should also enable data export, ensuring that users can move their data freely between services.
Privacy and Security:
Automatic Renewals:
Default Setting: By default, Google Contacts subscriptions are set to automatically renew at the end of the subscription period.
Grace Period: If auto-renewal fails, a seven-day grace period is provided to update payment information. During this period, users retain access to their current plan.
Flexible and Annual Plans:

Service Restrictions: If over the storage quota, users cannot send/receive emails, upload new files, or back up photos and videos until they reduce storage usage or purchase additional storage.
Data Deletion: If over the storage quota for two years, Google may delete content that counts towards the storage quota.
Refund Policy:
Non-Refundable: Storage plan purchases are generally non-refundable. Users retain access to the purchased storage for the subscription length, even if they cancel early.
Partial Refunds: In some regions, users may receive a partial refund if they end their subscription immediately
